How to create your USI before you Enrol

Student studying at home on a laptop

Before you can receive a nationally recognised certificate, such as a Certificate III in Individual Support or a First Aid statement of attainment, you need a Unique Student Identifier, or USI. It is free, it takes about five minutes, and you keep the same one for life.

What a USI is

Your USI is a reference number that links to an online record of all the nationally recognised training you complete in Australia. Training providers like ETC need it before we can issue your certificate, and you can use it later to download a transcript of your results for an employer.

How to create your USI

  1. Go to usi.gov.au and choose to create a USI.
  2. Select an identity document, such as a driver licence, Medicare card, passport, birth certificate or ImmiCard.
  3. Enter your details exactly as they appear on that document.
  4. Add your contact details and set up a password and security questions.
  5. Write down your USI and keep it with your enrolment documents.

If you hold a non-Australian passport with an Australian visa, you can use it to create a USI while you are in Australia.

Already studied before?

If you have done any vocational training since 2015, you may already have a USI. Use the “Forgotten USI” option on usi.gov.au rather than creating a second one.

Ready to enrol?

Have your USI and 100 points of ID ready, then follow our three steps to enrol. If you get stuck, call us and we will help you through it.
